The Chombok tree, also known as Irvingia malayana, is highly prized for its wood, often used to make charcoal. This practice has led to widespread deforestation, posing a significant threat to Cambodia’s forests. To combat this environmental concern, 3CORsECO has partnered with the Kui indigenous people in Kompong Thom and Preah Vihear provinces to find a sustainable alternative that benefits both the community and the environment.
3CORsECO’s initiative focuses on the sustainable harvesting of Chombok seeds, transforming them into a nutritious and versatile product. This approach not only helps to protect the Chombok trees from being cut down for charcoal but also provides the local communities with a more profitable and environmentally friendly alternative.
1. Harvesting and Initial Drying: Chombok fruits begin to fall in December and take several months to decompose, leaving behind the seeds. Local villagers then collect these seeds and dry them in the sun for several days.
2. Shell Removal: Once dried, the seeds are manually cracked open using hammers to remove the hard outer shell. This labor-intensive process is performed by the villagers, providing them with an additional source of income.
3. Drying and Skin Removal: The nuts, still covered by a brown inner skin, are then placed in an oven at high temperatures for 18 hours to remove moisture. Removing this inner skin is challenging due to the nut's delicate nature. Techniques borrowed from cashew nut processing are employed to peel the inner skin without breaking the nut.
4. Final Processing: The peeled Chombok nuts, now white kernels, are placed in a dehydrator to ensure complete dryness before being vacuum sealed for freshness. These final products can be used in a variety of culinary applications, particularly in baking, due to their rich nutritional profile.
Empowering Local Communities: By collaborating with the Kui indigenous people, 3CORsECO provides local farmers and villagers with a sustainable source of income. This initiative enables them to earn more from harvesting Chombok seeds than from cutting down trees for charcoal.
Preserving Forests: The shift from cutting Chombok trees to harvesting their seeds helps to protect Cambodia’s forests. This approach reduces deforestation and promotes the conservation of biodiversity.
Nutritional Benefits: Chombok nuts are rich in essential nutrients, making them a valuable addition to a balanced diet. They offer a healthy alternative to other nuts and are particularly suitable for use in various cuisines, especially in baking.
3CORsECO is dedicated to maintaining high standards of quality in its products. The collaboration with local communities ensures that the nuts are sourced sustainably, and the meticulous processing methods preserve their nutritional value and flavor. By choosing 3CORsECO’s Chombok nuts, consumers support environmental conservation and the well-being of local communities. This initiative exemplifies how innovative solutions can create economic opportunities while protecting the environment.
